“While stopped at a highway stop light the light turned green and the truck would not shift into first gear. I tried cycling the clutch, shifting into second, and shifting into reverse but the truck would still not shift into first gear as if it were blocked halfway between neutral and first gear. There was a semi-truck fast approaching behind me and they had to lay on the horn and swerve dangerously into the next lane over to avoid hitting me while I was stopped at a green light. Finally, after about 30 seconds and multiple attempts I was able to engage first gear after pumping the clutch a fe…”

“2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Hybrid. When trying to use 4HI/4LO the vehicle gets stuck in 4LO with the 4LO/4HI lights flashing. This means the vehicle has no idea what the state of the transmission is. It does not allow getting back to 2HI. In the state the vehicle is not drivable. It happens when offroading in the middle of no where. Toyota requires the vehicle to be towed to a dealer. We had this problem 2 weeks ago. The vehicle was towed to Stevenson Toyota in St George UT. They acknowledge it is a Toyota problem. They kept it for 10 days said they had 15 parts to fix it. “After having Toyota Tacoma rear brake hose recall performed at Steven Toyota Harrisonburg Va I have very poor braking! This is a huge safety concern for my family and myself. Toyota is not taking this matter seriously. I was told “bring it in and let the tech have another wack at it”. No get a master tech on this problem immediately! I had reservations about having this recall performed by Toyota because in Toyotas pursuit to fix a problem they always make it worse. This has been our family’s experience over the course of many years. I have reported this issues to Toyota corporate and they are…”

“On 7/6/2024 after already having driven my truck to the store I noticed that the rear cab power sliding window exploded outward. Most of the glass was on the tonneau cover but some was inside. While cleaning it I noticed some has fallen into the seat belt assembly for the rear passenger seat. The temperature was 81f and there was absolutely no possible way that this was vandalism or a projectile hitting the glass. Toyota won't cover it or take responsibility. Fine, my concern is the glass that fell into the seatbelt assembly and how that might affect the safety of the belt.”

Lane Departure 6

“What component failed?
The rear brake system (rotors and pads) and the components associated with Safety Recall 25TA04 (rear brake hoses). The parts are available for inspection. * How was safety put at risk?
The dealer (Island Toyota, St. Croix) labeled my 2024 Tacoma "UNSAFE TO DRIVE" on Invoice #[XXX] but refused to perform the Federal Safety Recall (25TA04) for rear brake hoses unless I paid for an $800 brake job first. This violates federal law by making a safety recall conditional on customer-paid maintenance. I am currently driving a vehicle the dealer documented as "unsafe" because…”

“I’ve had this truck for less than 2 years and the driver’s indoor handle has snapped and broken twice. The handle stays intact but the inner component breaks. The only way to open the door is from the outside of the vehicle. This is extremely dangerous in case of an emergency. I either have to roll the window down to open the window from the outside or climb out of the drivers seat and use an alternate door in the car. “Vehicle: Toyota Tacoma (2024 model year) Component: Factory-Installed Plastic Bed Cap Rail Covers I am reporting a recurring and potentially hazardous issue with the factory-installed plastic bed cap rail covers on the 2024 Toyota Tacoma. These covers separate from the truck body, especially at the corners, during normal use. I have paid out of pocket already once last November/December 2024 and then a year later on December 19th, 2025 the same things happen. “Lane keeping will kamikaze the vehicle on to exit ramps or exit only lanes when engaged at a highway speed. This seems most common when the truncated lane markers, usually used on exit-only lanes, and not the full length lane markers (the center line markings). Example: Vehicle is traveling at a static heading, freeway speed, two lane limited access freeway, driver in control, all lane keeping and adaptive features engaged. In one instance the truck continued to attempt to steer right even after crossing the white line. This complaint and specific instances were confirmed by the manufacturer however the manufacturer claims the vehicle is behaving as expected due to “limitations”. As such Toyota is saying the vehicle is going to regularly depart the lane automatically and they do not intend to perform nor pursue any fix.”

On the return trip, I noticed a creaking sound, loud clunks, particularly when going over bumps or turning, and also increased sway. “I was driving along and the top hat on my suspension blew out. Toyota used a cast aluminum top hat on the top of the coil over and the shock blew through the top of the top shock mount. They used a steel top hat on the 4Runner so I believe they know it is an issue but haven’t had enough issues with it yet to do a recall. I uploaded a picture of what my coil over looks like after it happened and what it is supposed to look like. Stock trd offroad suspension.”

Visibility/Wiper 4

“2024 new 4th-generation Tacoma Hybrid Limited. During driving in snow or rain, the front chrome grille or another component in the front, appears to collect water. Periodically, it releases a sudden burst of water or snow onto both sides of the windshield. The impact is abrupt, like having a snowball or large splash of water thrown at the glass, and is startling because it’s unexpected. This happens on both the driver and passenger sides, (but not at the same time) temporarily impairing visibility and potentially increasing the risk of an accident. Note: This occurs every time it snows or rain…”

How we read this (methodology)

How to read this: raw complaint totals are not a clean reliability score — a model year with more cars sold, or simply more years on the road, accumulates more complaints regardless of how good it is. So this page leans on two signals that are not distorted by sales volume: the share of complaints falling on each vehicle system (the breakdown above) and NHTSA's own crash / fire / injury / death flags. When we compare model years of the same model, we normalise by years on the road (complaints ÷ vehicle age) rather than comparing raw totals. Age-normalised, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma draws about 47.0 complaints per year on the road, ranking 1 of 8 among the Toyota Tacoma model years we have ingested (1 = most complaints per year on road).
