“I was driving down the Interstate and my sunroof exploded without apparent cause. This was in Colorado, and there was a change in altitude, so I thought perhaps a difference in pressure might have played a part. There were no cars in front of me nor any visible debris. I was just driving, and heard a loud bang over my head. My sunroof and shade were closed at the time.”

“The hood flutters, and this shimmering is distracting, especially on the highway. The dealership adjusted the rubber stoppers, and this did not fix the problem. On the highway, I have had sunlight flashing in my eyes which poses a safety concern, due to this hood flexing. The problem was noted by the sales rep at the dealership when test driving, and even after a service visit two days later. I bought this car, gold certified, a few days ago and it has persisted since. This seems to be a common problem for which there is a TSB for a Lexus vehicle already.”

How we read this (methodology)

How to read this: raw complaint totals are not a clean reliability score — a model year with more cars sold, or simply more years on the road, accumulates more complaints regardless of how good it is. So this page leans on two signals that are not distorted by sales volume: the share of complaints falling on each vehicle system (the breakdown above) and NHTSA's own crash / fire / injury / death flags. When we compare model years of the same model, we normalise by years on the road (complaints ÷ vehicle age) rather than comparing raw totals. Age-normalised, the 2024 Toyota RAV4 draws about 55.0 complaints per year on the road, ranking 3 of 14 among the Toyota RAV4 model years we have ingested (1 = most complaints per year on road).
