“2024 odyssey engine shut off while in drive thru at restaurant. Unshure if auto start stop override was active. Either way the van had to be re started using the start button. NHTSA complaint #11754219, 2026

“Car purchased July 4, 2024. Idle stop/start was working but after several months, it became defective. After driving for some time, idle stop/start wouldn't work properly and cut the engine off when idling. I would have to turn the car, open my door, and try to restart the car. It also occurs after parking, turning off the car and less than 10-15min attempt to restart. Most of the time, it'll start after 1 or 2 attempts. Except today 07/31/2026, I got home and parked. After 20min, I tried to start my car and after 10-15 attempts, it wouldn't start. After waiting 2 hours, the car finally starte…”

“Vehicle Safety Complaint – Automatic Sliding Door Injury to Child To the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, I am submitting this complaint to report what I believe may be a serious safety defect involving the automatic sliding door on my Honda vehicle. On June 9 at approximately 5:00 p.m., while the vehicle was parked in a residential driveway, the automatic sliding door severely injured my [XXX] son. “While stopped at traffic lights or in traffic, the Auto Idle Stop system activates, but the engine sometimes fails to restart when I release the brake pedal. The vehicle becomes disabled in traffic, and I have to shift the transmission into Park (P) to restart the engine.”

Forward Collision Avoidance 12 1 crash 3 injury

“At speed less than 25 mph, the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) did not work. At cross roads this CMBS will not work when a vehicle comes from the side. This will work only if it detects the vehicle's presence in front for more than 3-5 seconds. Will not activate during sudden presence of vehicle at any speed.”

“I was driving my vehicle and accelerating. My vehicle suddenly braked with no warning while I was driving. I hit my left side of my head as I was not expecting this to happen. I was nearly rear-ended/nearly caused a multi car accident. It was incredibly scary to have the CMBS go off for absolutely no reason. There was no car ahead of me or other reason for it to happen.”

“While driving in normal traffic, when I come to a complete stop and keep my foot on the brake, the Auto Idle Stop system activates as designed. However, when I release the brake to continue driving, the engine intermittently fails to restart properly. Instead, it repeatedly attempts to restart, cycling on and off several times before shutting down completely. When this occurs, the vehicle becomes disabled in traffic and does not respond as expected. It can take multiple attempts and a significant amount of time before the engine finally restarts, leaving me stranded in intersections or in mov…”

Power Train 11

“My 2024 Honda Odyssey has repeatedly failed to restart after the Auto Idle Stop system shuts the engine off at a red light. When I release the brake or press the accelerator, the engine does not restart as it should. The vehicle then shifts into Park or instructs me to place it in Park, and it is difficult to restart using the start button. This has left the vehicle disabled in an active traffic lane and creates a serious risk of being struck by another vehicle. I have been stuck at a red light with people honking at me and haven't been able to start the car for up to a minute. The problem is…”
NHTSA complaint #11750375, 2026

“The vehicle failed to re-start after being engine had been at full operating temperature then was turned off for a short period of time. It has also struggled to re-start with auto start/stop leaving the vehicle partially in a busy intersection without any engine power until it successfully turned over several seconds after releasing the brake pedal. The dealer is unable to replicate. They have tested the starter and battery and confirmed both test good at ambient temperatures. No warning lamps. Once the vehicle cools, it is able to re-start again.”
NHTSA complaint #11749356, 2026

“The vehicle has an automatic stop/start feature that is enabled by default, though there is a button readily accessible to deactivate the function easily ea. time the vehicle is operated. The vehicle has just had the starter replaced under warranty @ 25K miles. There have been issues with the vehicle struggling to start for at least six months now - rough, slow starts where the engine is struggling to turn over. If I forget to turn off the auto-start/stop function, the engine will sometimes shut off at a red light - but it won't turn on again when the light turns green and it's time to move.…”

Structure 5

“2024 Honda Odyssey with only 24K miles has a leak in the tailgate from bad welding in the body that is gathering water in the trunk. Safety isn’t at risk but I would say that the corrosion to any electrical items are at risk which will put me and my family and others at risk of something failing. Yes the problem has been reproduced and it’s a common thread on the internet. We will be taking it to the dealership to inspect since it’s still under warranty. No messaging of this from the car except the fowl odor.”

Fuel/Propulsion System 3

“The vehicle was stopped at a red light. This vehicle is equipped with an auto-start/stop system to save fuel. Once the red light turned green the engine refused to restart. This was the second instance. The vehicle took over 30 seconds before it would restart. None of the push-to-start buttons worked, the car would not recognize that the brake was pressed, and it had also shifted itself into park. Very dangerous while traffic was moving all around us.”

“I am writing to formally report and complain about a serious safety issue I am experiencing with my Honda Odyssey related to the Auto Idle Stop feature. While the vehicle is stopped and Auto Idle Stop is engaged, the engine unexpectedly shuts down and, in some cases, does not restart properly when I attempt to accelerate. This has occurred after normal driving and also immediately after refueling. When the issue happens, the vehicle loses power completely for several seconds, creating a dangerous situation—especially in traffic, at intersections, or while making turns. This issue is not only i…”

Engine And Engine Cooling 2

“The contact owns a 2024 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while at a stoplight, the auto idle stop feature malfunctioned, and the vehicle failed to immediately restart after releasing the brake pedal. On several occasions, the vehicle had to be shut off before restarting. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The contact was informed of the NHTSA Action Number: EA25004 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING); and related the failure to the campaign. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 8,500.”

Exterior Lighting 2

“Last week, I opened my vehicle door and noticed water standing in the foot well. I didn't think too much of it until I started driving down the street and gallons of water were gushing on my feet in the footwell from behind the steering wheel and fuse box. I parked and waited for it to dry out a few days. I took my vehicle to the dealer and was shocked to hear that this is caused because the sunroof has a drainage system, and when the primary drain clogs, due to pollen or dirt, the secondary drain drains directly into the driver footwell. They advised that this is an issue that disregards…”

Lane Departure 2

“While driving, the vehicle will suddenly jerk taking control of the steering. As similar defect has been noted on other models. Took to the dealership and they said it is the automatic gear box.”
NHTSA complaint #11715676, 2026

“When using the sensor-controlled, automatic wipers the lane keeping assist is silently disabled when the wiper speed switches to high. There is no warning or explicit notification of this other than the dashed lane markings indicator becoming "empty". There should be some on console warning that is more substantial so the driver knows they cannot rely on lane assist steering during this time.”

“Vehicle start up diagnostics show multiple failures, including ABS, e-steering, emergency braking, adaptive speed control. Dealership found a problem with the right rear ABS sensor. The sensor wire harness was severed. The harness showed damage in multiple places (see photos). Besides being severed, it showed another deep cut and a place where the outer plastic sheath was cut away. The loss of ABS sensor made the vehicle exhibit poor handling including braking. The vehicle has only 4000 miles and is in pristine condition with no damage.”

“There was a slow leak in the left rear tire overnight while the car was parked in driveway. In the morning the low tire pressure indicator light was on in the car. I drove the car to the Honda dealer to fill the tire with air. Overnight while parked in the driveway the tire leaked again and in the morning there was a low tire pressure warning again. Visibility/Wiper 1

“While driving on a highway in California we heard a bang above our heads followed by a cracking sound. I knew immediately that the sunroof exploded based on reading posts about it in a Facebook Odyssey owners group. Fortunately the interior slider/shade was closed and no glass fell on us. There was nothing above us to fall on the roof. There were no cars on front of us to kick up road debris, nor did we see anything airborne. The road was flat and smooth. The temperature was in the low seventies and had not changed in the previous hour. There is no discernable reason the glass would just shatt…”

How we read this (methodology)

How to read this: raw complaint totals are not a clean reliability score — a model year with more cars sold, or simply more years on the road, accumulates more complaints regardless of how good it is. So this page leans on two signals that are not distorted by sales volume: the share of complaints falling on each vehicle system (the breakdown above) and NHTSA's own crash / fire / injury / death flags. When we compare model years of the same model, we normalise by years on the road (complaints ÷ vehicle age) rather than comparing raw totals. Age-normalised, the 2024 Honda Odyssey draws about 28.0 complaints per year on the road, ranking 4 of 15 among the Honda Odyssey model years we have ingested (1 = most complaints per year on road).
