NHTSA complaint #11494005, 2022 · 1 injury(ies)
“The vehicle was proceeding on the freeway when the drivers side rear tire blew out and went completely flat. The low pressure tire warning system that alerted us never indicated that the air pressure was low or getting low, but rather it had instantly dropped to 0 PSI. There was no integrity left to the tire which posed an extreme safety hazard to the stability of the vehicle. Upon contacting Bridgestone I was asked to have a third party company inspect the tire to which we complied. The inspection revealed that the tire had suffered a failure due to a manufacturing defect and not wear/tear or…”

How we read this (methodology)
How to read this: raw complaint totals are not a clean reliability score — a model year with more cars sold, or simply more years on the road, accumulates more complaints regardless of how good it is. So this page leans on two signals that are not distorted by sales volume: the share of complaints falling on each vehicle system (the breakdown above) and NHTSA's own crash / fire / injury / death flags. When we compare model years of the same model, we normalise by years on the road (complaints ÷ vehicle age) rather than comparing raw totals. Age-normalised, the 2022 Toyota Avalon draws about 1.6 complaints per year on the road, ranking 11 of 13 among the Toyota Avalon model years we have ingested (1 = most complaints per year on road).
