NHTSA complaint #11750661, 2026
“My 2022 Jeep Cherokee Lux is currently at the dealership after they diagnosed a failed PTU. This came to my attention due to the messages the vehicle gave me, warning if Loss of 4WD capability and a Serv 4 WD light. Jeep has recalled over 61000 other Cherokees for the exact same problem. We are currently waiting for approval to repair from an Extended Warranty Company (Portfolio) which is delaying things, plus the dealership has already said part if backordered, they say approximately 15 days, though no guarantee, and I have heard wait has been much longer in many cases”
NHTSA complaint #11749035, 2026
“While coasting/foot off gas transmission will suddenly shift out of gear and a "Shift to Park" message will appear on dash. I must stop and shift to park then back into gear to re-engage the transmission. Driving will proceed normally at that point. This has occured unexpectedly and sporadically over the last year-3+ times. No error code is noted by the Jeep technician. Tech installed new shifter and bezel-seemed to work but then happened again. This is extremely hazardous while in traffic and on freeway (occurred once when coasting when on freeway off-ramp). When looking on-line it…”

“Battery went dead after 4 days of being parked. Preceded by car not charging fully after driving. Dealer had to replace battery at 60,000 miles with no other fault detected. After market battery did not fix problem. Needed to be replaced by OEM battery. Still noticed not charging fully after driving. High current drain while off and parked detected. One dark night noticed dash screen came on with no key around the car then went off then cycled back on. All car modules did not shutdown. “The vehicle makes a "pumping" noise when starting to acquire cruising speed. The noise started after the front brakes had to be replaced a few months after the purchase. Before the installation of the new brakes it was just fine. The car has been checked for this noise about two times already but the noise being intermittent is not always present when being checked. There has not been any warning lights or messages.”

“Today May 20, 2024 we called the NHTS to inform that we did received the notification from the manufacturer indicating that there is indeed an important safety recall which can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. In the same letter the manufacturer states that The remedy for this condition is currently unavailable. When asking about what is considered a reasonable amount of time to solve this issue we were told that around July 20, 2024 we should expect a letter with the official findings. We are just writing this report to show that we are aware of the situation and awaiting the offi…”

“Your website has some trouble & won't accept my jpg files. First time to see this. I use cruise control all the time on 3 vehicles I own. But, this JEEP has a strange problem that is not safe. Almost all vehicles I have driven with cruise controls will exceed set speed by 1~3mph while going down a steep hill. But my JEEP will exceed by 5~7mph on steep hills. I have turned off cruise control when it didn't control speed and drove manually for a while, then used cruise control again. If I set at 70mph, often speed will increase to 75~77mph going downhill; then brakes will engage strongly (hard…”

How we read this (methodology)
How to read this: raw complaint totals are not a clean reliability score — a model year with more cars sold, or simply more years on the road, accumulates more complaints regardless of how good it is. So this page leans on two signals that are not distorted by sales volume: the share of complaints falling on each vehicle system (the breakdown above) and NHTSA's own crash / fire / injury / death flags. When we compare model years of the same model, we normalise by years on the road (complaints ÷ vehicle age) rather than comparing raw totals. Age-normalised, the 2022 Jeep Cherokee draws about 9.4 complaints per year on the road, ranking 3 of 4 among the Jeep Cherokee model years we have ingested (1 = most complaints per year on road).
Before you buy this Jeep Cherokee
Don't buy on the strength of a problems page alone. Check the exact VIN of the car you're looking at. The open recalls are free, and the full $19 safety report pulls every complaint, safety rating and a downloadable PDF for that one vehicle.
