Power Train 112

“The transmission is failing after about 65,000 miles (7 years from first use). It can be inspected upon request. My safety is at risk in that the transmission is steadily getting worse and could fail at any time or any speed. The transmission failure was diagnosed and confirmed by a local Toyota dealer. There are no warning lights. A high-pitched whine is heard while driving which gets higher with faster vehicle speed.”
NHTSA complaint #11753170, 2026

“Transmission is failing in car. Has started whining, consistent with other complaints I have seen regarding the transmissions in these vehicles.”
NHTSA complaint #11752091, 2026

“My vehicle completely lost power and stalled on the freeway, requiring a tow. A Toyota dealership has diagnosed it with a total internal failure of the UA80 transmission and quoted me $9,000. This vehicle has been properly maintained, including a documented transmission fluid service at a Toyota facility in March of this year. A modern powertrain should not suffer a life-threatening failure at 130,000 miles. Because of this severe safety defect and my documented maintenance history, I am requesting a Corporate Goodwill Accommodation to cover or significantly cost-share this replacement.”

Last year in August of 2025 I was in the Tag n Go car wash. I pulled up they stopped me and I put the car in neutral. “At 170,000 miles, the 2019 Toyota Hybrid Camry LE has developed a consistent drive train lurch/stumble/shake around 20, 40 and 60 MPH, which is increasing in intensity and occurrence. This defect is quite startling and occurs regardless of efficiency, HVAC, cruise control, etc. settings. Electronic Stability Control (Esc) 3

“I HAVE A 2019 TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID LE WHICH PURCHASED AS BRAND NEW. AFTER 2-3 MONTHS OF DRIVING, I NOTICED THAT AT LOW SPEEDS AND PARTICULARLY WHEN THE ROAD IS VERY FLAT IF THE CAR HITS ANY KIND OF POTHOLE OR BUMP, THERE IS A GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT BREAKS (OR MAYBE THE CVT GEARS ENGAGING FOR REGENERATIVE BREAKING) AND SOMETIMES EVEN THE ABS LIGHT STARTS SHINING IN THE DASHBOARD. THIS IS NOT EASILY REPLICABLE BUT IT'S MOST LIKELY TO HAPPEN WHEN SLOWING DOWN BEHIND A STOP SIGN OR RED LIGHT. AT HIGHER SPEEDS OR IF THE BREAKS ARE APPLIED WITH HIGHER FORCE THIS ISSUE IS ALMOST ENTIRELY…”

Exterior Lighting 3

“ALL FLASHERS STOPPED WORKING IN VEHICLE INCLUDING HAZARD AT 39,000 MILES BUT MAKES THE NOISE AS IF YOUR SIGNALS ARE ON. CHECKED FUSES AND IT IS NOT A FUSE SO IT MUST BE FAULTY EQUIPMENT. THE HEATED MIRRORS HAVE NOT WORKED SINCE DAY 1, I THOUGHT THE CAR DID NOT COME WITH THEM UNTIL I SAW THE FUSE WHEN CHECKING THE SIGNAL LIGHTS.”
NHTSA complaint #11413501, 2021

“AT NIGHT,ESPECIALLY ON A VERY DARK ROAD, MY HEADLIGHTS, ESPECIALLY IN THE LOW BEAM MODE, SEVERELY RESTRICT MY VISION. I CAN ONLY VIEW THE ROAD BY LOOKING THROUGH THE LOWER PART OF THE WINDSHIELD. THE VIEW THROUGH THE UPPER PART IS TOTALLY DARK AS IF OBSTRUCTED BY AN OBJECT. I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS IS A DANGEROUS SAFETY ISSUE AND IT PLACES MYSELF AND OTHERS AT RISK OF DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY. I HAVE SEEN THIS ISSUE REPORTED BY OTHERS ONLINE AND I AM UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THE FACT THAT NHTSA HAS NOT INFORMED ME OF THIS PROBLEM NOR HAS TAKEN ANY ACTION TO CORRECT IT.”
NHTSA complaint #11352698, 2020

“THIS COMPLAINT IS FOR ALL CARS. WHEN DRIVING IN HEAVY RAIN IT IS IMPORTANT TO TURN ON HEADLIGHTS IN ORDER FOR THE TAILLIGHTS TO ILLUMINATE. ALMOST NO ONE DOES THIS ANYMORE DUE TO DRL AND AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHTS. DURING A RECENT VERY HEAVY RAINSTORM IT WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE CARS AHEAD OF ME, ALMOST RESULTING IN A COLLISION. IT SHOULD BE MANDATORY THAT THE TAILLIGHTS COME ON ANYTIME THE WIPERS ARE ACTIVE. THIS IS SERIOUS. *TR”

How we read this (methodology)

How to read this: raw complaint totals are not a clean reliability score — a model year with more cars sold, or simply more years on the road, accumulates more complaints regardless of how good it is. So this page leans on two signals that are not distorted by sales volume: the share of complaints falling on each vehicle system (the breakdown above) and NHTSA's own crash / fire / injury / death flags. When we compare model years of the same model, we normalise by years on the road (complaints ÷ vehicle age) rather than comparing raw totals. Age-normalised, the 2019 Toyota Camry draws about 48.5 complaints per year on the road, ranking 1 of 13 among the Toyota Camry model years we have ingested (1 = most complaints per year on road).
