“All of my braking/abs lights intermittently go on and off. My 2019 Honda HRV runs fine but when dealer looked at it they said it was the VSA and to replace would be over $4k. Dealer said eventually my vehicle may shut down if not taken care of. I am wondering if this is a common problem and if will be a recall?”

“I was parallel parking and when I put the car in reverse and barely touched the gas it suddenly accelerated into the car behind me. It was so fast it shot backwards like a rock into the car parked behind me. This was not driver error. It is now with an independent mechanic so I do not know at this point if they can reproduce the incident. I did not take it to Honda as I wanted an independent an unbiased report on the car. No warning lights, etc. before hand. The car behind me had somebody sitting in it and he hurt his hand. BUT if there had not been a car parked behind me I would have shot o…”

Fuel/Propulsion System 29

“It started as all the dashboard lights came on, and the car smelled like gasoline. Then when I would fill up my gas tank, it would only go to 3/4 of a tank and the gas fumes increased. I was parked at the VCU campus parking lot when the gas started to leak out of the bottom of the car. The fire department came and said I could not drive the car until it was serviced. I was told at the mechanic that there is a hairline crack at the top of the fuel pump housing. The transfer tube was hung up on the float, causing false fuel tank readings. Had I been driving the car it could have caught fire whic…”

“The instrument cluster "flickers" due to a bad connection. This cluster contains the odometer, fuel gauge, and other vehicle information. It does not work at all when the outdoor temperature is cold. I took this to my Honda dealer and they state it was a bad connection and I would have to pay to replace the whole cluster for $1800. This is unacceptable and Honda should have to fix this as it is a known problem - this has the potential to cause an accident for someone to run out of gas in busy traffic. And not being able to see the odometer/mileage or oil life indicator is not acceptable.…”

How we read this (methodology)

How to read this: raw complaint totals are not a clean reliability score — a model year with more cars sold, or simply more years on the road, accumulates more complaints regardless of how good it is. So this page leans on two signals that are not distorted by sales volume: the share of complaints falling on each vehicle system (the breakdown above) and NHTSA's own crash / fire / injury / death flags. When we compare model years of the same model, we normalise by years on the road (complaints ÷ vehicle age) rather than comparing raw totals. Age-normalised, the 2019 Honda HR-V draws about 27.6 complaints per year on the road, ranking 3 of 9 among the Honda HR-V model years we have ingested (1 = most complaints per year on road).

Before you buy this Honda HR-V

Don't buy on the strength of a problems page alone. Check the exact VIN of the car you're looking at. The open recalls are free, and the full $19 safety report pulls every complaint, safety rating and a downloadable PDF for that one vehicle.
