“I pulled off the dealer lot with 3 miles on the odometer, came to a stop sign and damn near smacked my face on the steering wheel due to a hard downshift from 2nd to 1st gear. Pulled back into the lot and was told that "I have to break it in". As I laughed in his face, I knew I messed up buying a GM product. 20 miles down the road, I start getting transmission shutter during light acceleration. Took it back to the dealer and they ended up changing the fluid. As I was coming to a stop to pull in my driveway, the transmission hard shifted and threw me past the driveway. “Steering binding hard in turns. Turns over 45 deg of steering wheel rotation cause periodic binding in the turn, regardless of vehicle speed. Can be reproduced when the truck isn’t moving. Very nearly caused a serious accident as could not control direction out of a turn at 30 mph, and had to come to a rapid stop to avoid hitting another car. Wiggling the steering wheel in both directions with moderate force/torque releases the binding steering. Vehicle only has 44,000 mi with no off-road use. Vehicle is going in for service on 4/18/24. How we read this (methodology)
How to read this: raw complaint totals are not a clean reliability score — a model year with more cars sold, or simply more years on the road, accumulates more complaints regardless of how good it is. So this page leans on two signals that are not distorted by sales volume: the share of complaints falling on each vehicle system (the breakdown above) and NHTSA's own crash / fire / injury / death flags. When we compare model years of the same model, we normalise by years on the road (complaints ÷ vehicle age) rather than comparing raw totals. Age-normalised, the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado draws about 18.1 complaints per year on the road, ranking 5 of 10 among the Chevrolet Colorado model years we have ingested (1 = most complaints per year on road).
