“Vehicle brought in for Recall 20UF (fuel tank suction pump fire risk) on 04/15/2026. Upon pickup after approximately one week of dealer service, a strong chemical odor was present in the cabin that did not exist prior to service. Odor persists despite cabin air filter replacement with activated charcoal filter, professional carpet shampooing, and extended airing out over several weeks. Dealer dismissed concerns and suggested owner pay for cabin filter replacement which had no effect. VW's own Recall 20UF documentation acknowledges that fuel odor may be noticed by occupants when the recall cond…”

“Took my car into VW in Johnson City TN because my millage has been dropping drastically. Went from about 420 miles to a tank, down to less than 300. There is hesitation and jerking when I accelerate as well as a gasoline odor in the cab of the vehicle after refueling. Service manager said there was no code thrown and when he took it for a drive her drove “conservatively” and the mpg was normal. They did not physically inspect the fuel pump jet and gaslit me saying it was how I’m driving. Refused to actually look at the problem and then threatened that if I wanted them to look they would charge…”

“SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION OF ODI COMPLAINT NUMBER 11740201. I am submitting critical supplemental information to my active safety complaint regarding a 2018 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen (1.8T engine). My primary safety issues are a severe drop in fuel efficiency (cut completely in half), heavy vehicle hesitation/jerking during acceleration, and a powerful raw gasoline smell inside the cabin immediately after fueling. These symptoms heavily align with the known physical failures covered under Volkswagen's Suction Jet Pump safety campaigns. I took my vehicle to the Volkswagen dealership today f…”

“Sunroof Glass Implosion While Driving (2018 Volkswagen Golf) While driving my 2018 Volkswagen Golf at normal highway speed, my sunroof suddenly and violently imploded without any warning or external impact. The sound was extremely loud—similar to a gunshot or an explosion—and initially I believed something had struck the vehicle or that a large object had landed on the sunroof.Glass shattered and fell into the interior of the vehicle, sending shards throughout the cabin. The incident was extremely frightening and caused me to momentarily lose focus while driving. I narrowly avoided a potential…”

Structure 5 1 injury
“There is an issue with the gear shift cover trim. The piece that goes around the gear shift has a chrome coating that has been pealing off. Over multiple occasions that pealed off piece of metal has cut my finger causing bleeding. There seems to be a recall on the DSG GTI for this, but not the MT. I am having the same exact issue as the DSG and the replacement part is the exact same (likely same original part). The safety issue is that this has cut my finger multiple times with bleeding and can be quite painful. I called VW and was told my car was not part of the DSG recall 34J7/34L9, b…”

“IMMEDIATELY AFTER BEGINNING TO LEAVE WORK ON NOVEMBER 13, 2019, I NOTICED THE SUNROOF ON MY 2018 VW GOLF WAS SHATTERING AND CRUMBLING AWAY, STARTING TOWARD THE FRONT AND CENTER OF THE SUNROOF. THE INITIAL BREAK MUST HAVE OCCURRED EITHER AS IT WAS SITTING IN THE PARKING LOT AT WORK, OR IMMEDIATELY AFTER BEGINNING TO DRIVE, AT NO MORE THAN 20MPH, BECAUSE I NOTICED IT ON THE DRIVEWAY LEADING AWAY FROM MY WORKPLACE. THE WEATHER WAS ABOUT 30 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT WITH NO PRECIPITATION AND THERE WAS NO ROAD DEBRIS INVOLVED. OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS, I TRIED TO LIMIT MY USE OF THE CAR (I SECURED A RENTAL…”

Engine 4
“Volkswagen Wastegate Turbo Failure / design flaw and “wrongfully and intentionally” concealed a defect from consumers that could cause their vehicle’s engine turbocharger to fail prematurely at any time. Drivers have been unfairly forced to pay thousands out of pocket to repair and my estimate from a VW. dealer is: $4199.21 and I had to pay a $200 diagnostic fee. This is a major safety issue for the vehicle will lag and not accelerate. There is a class action lawsuit filed and settled but I cannot get Volkswagen to help me.”
NHTSA complaint #11661666, 2025
“Vehicle intermittently stalls when coming to a stop in traffic while in gear. Has occurred on multiple separate occasions, but cannot be easily re-produced. When vehicle stalls it can be difficult to restart while in traffic and occurs without warning creating safety hazard. Usually there are no codes stored by the computer when this occurs, but check engine light has been noticed. Vehicle has been brought to dealership 3 different times for same issue. Upon first visit starter was replaced. Upon 2nd visit an oxygen sensor was replaced. Upon 3rd visit no further action was taken and I was…”

“COOLANT LEAK NOTICED UNDERNEAT THE ENGINE. IT RUN DOWN TO THE OIL PAN DRIPPING ON THE DRIVE WAY. TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSIS. THEY SAID LEAK IS COMING FROM THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING. MILEAGE IS NOW 73700. VW POWERTRAIN WARRANTY COVERS UP TO 72000.”
NHTSA complaint #11384548, 2020
Power Train 4
“Received a low coolant warning and then checked the coolant level. Coolant was low and was topped off. One week later the issue recurred as the coolant level and dropped below minimum levels again. Thermostat housing had a slow leak which was discovered by the dealer. This seems to be a flaw in the design of the thermostat housing as multiple owners are reporting the same issue with the same flaw in the thermostat housing.”

Forward Collision Avoidance 3
“Second occurrence of this issue approximately two years apart, unresolved and unaddressed by manufacturer. Driving during evening on lit city street at night traveling in lane of traffic. In normal course of driving (~25 mph) vehicle applied full brakes with no advance notice in the middle of road. Forward Collision Assist had been activated by what appeared to be a patch of ice on the road ahead. Full braking while driving posed significant risk of rear collision due to automated full brake application without input or forewarning to the driver.”
NHTSA complaint #11565501, 2024
“Had forward collision assist (turned on by default at engine start) turned on. When entering an intersection, vehicle stopped short to a full stop right in front of a metal plate on the road in the intersection. Had there been a vehicle behind me, the system may have needlessly caused a collision.”
NHTSA complaint #11459292, 2022
“AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING SYSTEM ENGAGES WITHOUT CAUSE OR WARNING. AT BOTH SLOW AND MODERATE SPEEDS WITH NO OBSTACLE IN FRONT OF CAR. RISK OF CAUSING A REAR-END ACCIDENT VERY HIGH. DEALERSHIP RAN DIAGNOSTIC AND FOUND NOTHING. RECOMMENDS DISABLING SYSTEM IF ISSUE PERSISTS.”

“I have owned the 2018 VW GTI since new. With 105,000 miles, following a 30 minute highway drive, the EPC light came on and the vehicle entered limp mode. After turning car off, letting it sit 5 minutes, and restarting, EPC light went off and no limp mode. Drove car daily for another week with no observed issues until appointment. Brought car to dealer. They identified the fuel injector wiring harness was faulty and needed to be replaced, and fuel injector #3 was dirty and needed to be replaced, at total cost of $1,756. Online search turned up VWP-23-03, a FUEL INJECTOR WIRING HARNESS LIMIT…”

Exterior Lighting 2
“Hello my left front headlamp failed. Initially both my headlights were sweaty/foggy, which started early 2021 but no light present. This is a safety issue especially when driving at night. It is available for inspection. The vehicle was inspected at the dealer Galpin VW. AFS light came on when system failed.”

“Headlights don't turn on immediately upon ignition start. Error message appears on infotainment and dashboard. The temporary fix, Turned off the vehicle and locked the car, and tried again and it worked just fine. I took the car for regular service when I had mentioned to them that my headlights were acting up. they told me they found no fault codes and could not do anything about it. I spoke to a manager and they told me to take pictures if it happens again, so I did. (The picture in the dark) The headlights would not turn on once again in evening in the Auto setting and I had to cycle the…”

Service Brakes 2
“THE "FRONT ASSIST" SYSTEM ON A 2018 VW GOLF R IS PRONE TO MAKING UNSAFE ABRUPT STOPS IN TRAFFIC. IF A LEADING CAR MAKES AN ABRUPT STOP, THE FRONT ASSIST SYSTEM APPLIES INSTANT HEAVY BRAKING EVEN WHEN THE DRIVER IS ALREADY BRINGING THE CAR TO A SMOOTH STOP AT A SAFE DISTANCE. THIS DOUBLE-BRAKING RESULTS IN UNEXPECTED SKIDDING AND RISKS A REAR-END COLLISION WITH FOLLOWING CARS. THE MANUAL OVERRIDE TO FRONT ASSIST IS PRESSING HARD ON THE GAS PEDAL. THIS ACTION CAN'T BE PERFORMED WHEN THE DRIVER IS ALREADY BRINGING THE CAR TO A STOP.”
NHTSA complaint #11183564, 2019
“I HAD TO BRAKE HARD AS THE PERSON IN FRONT OF ME ON THE OFFRAMP STOPPED SHORT. I THINK SOMEONE CUT THE DRIVER IN FRONT OF ME OFF, OR PEOPLE WERE JUST HAVING TROUBLE MERGING. THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES DID NOT WORK, THE CAR FISH-TAILED FROM RIGHT TO LEFT. I LET UP ON THE BRAKES AND THE CAR STRAIGHTENED OUT AND I DIDN'T GET KILLED BUT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A BAD ACCIDENT. THANKFULLY THE GUY BEHIND ME WAS ABLE TO STOP. THIS IS A CAR I BOUGHT LAST WEEK. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES. EVEN MY 10 YEAR OLD CAR WOULD HAVE ACTIVATED ANTI-LOCK.”

“UNKNOWN We have Hankook Ventus S1 Noble 2 225/40R18 tires on our 2018 VW GTI that came OEM, and are the same on the car as when we took possession of the car from the dealer in 2018. The front right tire, has two substantial cracks and one section where a more open gap occurred in the exterior sidewall. In this latter section, it is very near the tire's tread. We have less than 14,000 miles on this vehicle, as we are retired and did not drive much to begin with, but even less after the Pandemic occurred. Additional Details (below) - I first saw the tire issues on 11/10/2021, but the tire…”

How we read this (methodology)
How to read this: raw complaint totals are not a clean reliability score — a model year with more cars sold, or simply more years on the road, accumulates more complaints regardless of how good it is. So this page leans on two signals that are not distorted by sales volume: the share of complaints falling on each vehicle system (the breakdown above) and NHTSA's own crash / fire / injury / death flags. When we compare model years of the same model, we normalise by years on the road (complaints ÷ vehicle age) rather than comparing raw totals. Age-normalised, the 2018 Volkswagen Golf draws about 4.1 complaints per year on the road, ranking 6 of 12 among the Volkswagen Golf model years we have ingested (1 = most complaints per year on road).
