Forward Collision Avoidance 3 1 injury

“The radar cruise control system on my 2017 Toyota Highlander is not functioning properly and creates a safety hazard. When initially setting the radar cruise control, the system works as expected. I can accelerate to a desired speed, press the “set” control, and the vehicle maintains that speed correctly. The problem occurs when I try to increase the set speed. After setting an initial speed (for example, 45 mph), I accelerate to a higher speed (such as 65 mph) and press the “set” control again to update the cruise setting. Instead of setting the new speed, the system reverts to the previously…”

“I WAS IN A REAR IMPACT COLLISION IN MY HIGHLANDER. MY VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY ON A HIGHWAY, HAVING STOPPED TO AVOID A COLLISION, AND WAS HIT FROM BEHIND AT A RELATIVELY HIGH RATE OF SPEED (ESTIMATED 55-65 MPH). MY CAR WAS PUSHED INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF IT WHICH CAUSED A CHAIN REACTION WITH SEVERAL OTHER VEHICLES. IMMEDIATELY AFTER IMPACT I BEGAN TO FEEL NECK AND BACK PAIN AND WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL. PRIOR TO TRANSPORT, WE NOTICED THAT MY HEADREST HAD BROKEN FREE IN THE IMPACT AND WAS LAYING ON THE BACK FLOORBOARD.”

“THE NEW HEADRESTS ARE TOO FAR FORWARD AND CREATE A LITERAL PAIN IN THE NECK. THE NEW HEADREST REQUIREMENTS ARE CAUSING THE MANUFACTURERS TO PRODUCE VEHICLES THAT THE END USERS ARE HAVING TO MODIFY, OR SET THE SEATS AT AN ANGLE THAT INCREASES THE LIKELIHOOD OF INJURY IN AN ACCIDENT. THIS IS TRUE OF MOST NEW VEHICLES. PLEASE REVISE THE NEW REGULATIONS.”

Visibility 3

“Side mirror (glass) shakes/rattles at speeds over 45mph. This affects the visibility of things in the mirror as well as becomes distracting to the driver. When on the interstate with smooth pavement it's impossible to ignore... It's just more noticeable then. Tried moving the mirror to verify and yes, it's loose. Just reporting it now that I became aware of this website but car has had this issue for at least 2 years.”

It has been handled with extreme care and I got it in September of 2023. It has stayed in my specific car and the only reason I found the problem was because I was cleaning them off. It is the third Chicco car seat to have found the foam headrest either broken in half or completely separate from the plastic base in 2 months (2023 & 2024 manufacture dates). How we read this (methodology)

How to read this: raw complaint totals are not a clean reliability score — a model year with more cars sold, or simply more years on the road, accumulates more complaints regardless of how good it is. So this page leans on two signals that are not distorted by sales volume: the share of complaints falling on each vehicle system (the breakdown above) and NHTSA's own crash / fire / injury / death flags. When we compare model years of the same model, we normalise by years on the road (complaints ÷ vehicle age) rather than comparing raw totals. Age-normalised, the 2017 Toyota Highlander draws about 26.1 complaints per year on the road, ranking 5 of 13 among the Toyota Highlander model years we have ingested (1 = most complaints per year on road).

Before you buy this Toyota Highlander

Don't buy on the strength of a problems page alone. Check the exact VIN of the car you're looking at. The open recalls are free, and the full $19 safety report pulls every complaint, safety rating and a downloadable PDF for that one vehicle.
