“My vehicle experienced the exact component failure described in NHTSA Recall 24V-896 (FCA Campaign C4B), but my VIN is currently excluded due to the manufacturing date window." My truck's build date was 01/17. The following warning lights appeared (ABS, Traction Control/ESC) and I lost auxiliary cruise control. An independent shop diagnosed the failed Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) / ABS pump motor and I had to pay out of pocket ($750) to restore the safety features of the vehicle.”

“While driving the anti-skid anti-lock failure light flashes with an audible warning. This has routinely been happening since early 2025, with the only local dealer advise is to rapidly depress the gas pedal with the key on (engine off). There’s been zero advancement to provide remedy to date. When I ask the dealer, he says “we haven’t been notified yet of parts being available. You’ll be notified when we get to okay. This is in reference to safety recall 24V-896.”

“The recall C4B/NHTSB 24v-893 came out in January of 2025. The parts are still not available for this recall (per Chrysler/RAM). I have been driving my truck with a possible non-working ABS system for a year and a half, often pulling a 10,000 lb trailer. I feel that this is ridiculous that the part is still not available. If I had a wreck during this time, I guarantee that I would sue the crap out of Chrysler.”

“It is a known issue that 2017 ram 2500 diesels experience turbo or actuator failures at low mileage costing upwards of 8-10000 dollars in repairs. My ram only has 61000 miles and due to exhaust fluid requirements etc, premature failure is common. Owners should be able to extend the warranty to 15 years as Chrysler has known this issue and has failed to address it. The code is in the attached screenshot.”

“This CHEAP fix is abhorrent! It calls for welding an adjustable part of the steering linkage rendering it non- adjustable when having the front end aligned in the future. Not to mention the effect of welding, potentially causing a problem with the integrity of the metal. The correct fix for this SAFETY issue is to REPLACE this steering linkage component, the entire Drag Link! NOT do a "back yard, shade tree mechanic" weld job on the steering linkage of all things! I am appalled that NHTSA approved such a thing. PLEASE revisit this issue and do the right thing. Require Chrysler (FCA US LLC) to…”

“Recall for the drag link on this series of 2500 trucks calls for welding an adjustable part of the steering linkage - the drag link jam nuts, rendering that part non-adjustable. Once welded, to then perform an alignment the welds would need to be carefully ground off, alignment work performed, and then once again everything re-torqued and welded back in place per the recall advisory steps. Also consider the effects of welding, grinding, and welding again and again over the life of this HD truck. An alignment is critical to towing thousands of pounds, pulling to the side and overcorrecting whil…”

“Had certified preowned truck aligned after purchase and shop could not adjust front end to stop pull to the right. Took it back to the dealer and they replaced a drag link (but tech said it had nothing to do with the pull) and the second time they rotated front tires left to right. Still pulls to right. Googled problem and I find that it is a common problem with Ram trucks but requires an after market install of ball joints to be able to adjust for the pull. Overheard a service writer who stated “ you can’t align a Ram”.”

This is very costly to repair and Ram knows it is a problem! It is also very dangerous for the brakes to be an issue on any vehicle, but especially on one that has a heavy front end as diesel trucks do. “The check engine light came on and I took the vehicle to the Ram service center. The tech said the turbo actuator caused the light to go on. He reset the computer and said to bring the vehicle back if it comes on again. About 1 month later it reappeared. The Ram service said the turbo charger actuator needed replacing (the complete turbocharger). They said the failure could result in a total loss of power or engine failure. Tires 4

“While traveling westbound on I-64 at highway speed (~65 MPH), I experienced a complete tire failure of the driver's side front fire. It was first experienced as severe front-end vibration that made control of the vehicle difficult; there were no warnings or other indications of imminent failure. Fortunately, I was able to get the vehicle to the roadway's shoulder without injury or accident. Upon exiting the vehicle, I noticed that the left front tire was flat, and a portion of the tire's tread was protruding above the surface of the tire. Because of vehicle's location/proximity to the inte…”

Back Over Prevention 3

“Intermittent “service ABS system” light on dash resulting in loss of ABS, cruise control, park-sense, and 4x4. No amount of troubleshooting from a reputable diesel mechanic has been able to fix this. From what I have read online this is a very common issue and the truck likely needs an HCU/ABS module”

“My truck is a 2017 Ram 2500 and is experiencing the same issues as those included in NHTSA Recall No. 24V-896. However my truck was produced before the April 1, 2017 range listed. I have replaced the HCU as recommended by the dealer on [XXX] at my own cost and this did not resolve the issue. The dealer says the control module is faulty, but Chrysler will not provide the part as they say the HCU I purchased is in the Faulty range also but they say that even though the part I purchased to correct the issue is under recall, my truck is not and they have not responded to my request to correct t…”

How we read this (methodology)

How to read this: raw complaint totals are not a clean reliability score — a model year with more cars sold, or simply more years on the road, accumulates more complaints regardless of how good it is. So this page leans on two signals that are not distorted by sales volume: the share of complaints falling on each vehicle system (the breakdown above) and NHTSA's own crash / fire / injury / death flags. When we compare model years of the same model, we normalise by years on the road (complaints ÷ vehicle age) rather than comparing raw totals. Age-normalised, the 2017 Ram 2500 draws about 67.6 complaints per year on the road, ranking 1 of 10 among the Ram 2500 model years we have ingested (1 = most complaints per year on road).

Before you buy this Ram 2500

Don't buy on the strength of a problems page alone. Check the exact VIN of the car you're looking at. The open recalls are free, and the full $19 safety report pulls every complaint, safety rating and a downloadable PDF for that one vehicle.
