Power Train 31 1 crash

“I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE. WHILE SLOWING DOWN AND BRAKING TO A STOP THE CAR SUDDENLY SURGED FORWARD, JUMPED A CURB AND RAN INTO A ROCK RETAINING WALL. I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR, IT GAVE NO RESISTANCE AND DID NOT STOP THE CAR. THE ENGINE WAS REVVING AT A HIGH RATE, EVEN WHILE IT HIT THE WALL. THE REPAIRS WERE OVER $2000 FOR DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END, LIGHTS, AIR CONDITIONER AND RADIATOR SUPPORT. THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CAR WAS ABOUT 8-10 FEET FROM THE WALL WHEN IT ACCELERATED. I HAD THE CAR REPAIRED. I TOOK IT TO A HONDA DEALER AND ALSO CONTACTED AMERICAN HONDA. BO…”

NHTSA complaint #11742593, 2026

“The car suddenly was unable to move forward or back even though engine was still running. I was able to roll to a stop in the parking lot at work, but moments before had been on the highway. Tow truck driver noted cap to transmission fluid had popped off. The car was towed to Honda dealer which determined new transmission needed. Even though there had been Honda technical service bulletins describing issues with transmissions for Honda HRVs for years 2016 to 2020, both the dealership (not purchased there), corporate Honda and dealer where car was purchased, all refused to pay for the problem.”

NHTSA complaint #11737460, 2026

“My car’s warning lights came on and it had a hard time staying in gear. The engine was making a screeching sound and it stuttered when I drove it. I took it to my local mechanic and they found metal shavings and chunks in the transmission. They said they had seen this problem before. I called Honda and they requested I take it to Honda service station to do an additional assessment. Service center said the same thing- it was a faulty design in this make and model and the transmission belt was being ground down causing the metal chunks to cause damage. “4/22/2025, my Honda HRV 2017 is parked and locked. The front/rear head lights will come on after the car is locked for 45 second and around 5 seconds after the lights came on it will sound off the alarm. The next day i took it to Honda to do diagnostic and they told me is the Body Control Module(BCM) issue. It will cause $1,350 +tax to replace it. It is pricey but it seems odds an eight years old car barely 45k miles with good taken care that a module so easy to went bad. Also all services(transmission oil, synthetic oil change, brake fluid, etc...) are done at the dealership nothing being do…”

“My 2017 Honda HR-V in White Orchid Pearl (NH-788P) has severe paint peeling on multiple panels (hood, roof, door). Honda issued Service Bulletin 19-064 covering this exact defect. However, I have been informed by Honda customer service and Honda dealers that my vehicle is no longer covered because it is 1 year beyond the 7-year extension period, even though the defect matches the exact conditions described in the bulletin. This is clearly a manufacturing defect, not normal wear. A consumer fairness concern, as the defect appears years before what should be the normal paint life of a vehicle.…”

Fuel/Propulsion System 11

“While driving, starting from a stop sign / or traffic light, the vehicle will stall out upon light acceleration. Going through the recall information, it appears that many 2017 Honda HRV and 2018 Honda HRV have a safety recall for the fuel pump ( located inside the fuel tank / under the drivers seat). For whatever reason, my HRV is not included in the recall but suffers from the exact same problems as the recalled vehicles. This has happened numerous times, in light traffic and in extremely heavy traffic where my life was put in danger by this stalling issue.”
NHTSA complaint #11737980, 2026

“Merging into traffic and car began shaking, stuttering, dash lights all flashing. Pulled to side of highway + shut vehicle off. Checked exterior of vehicle + tires, all ok. Turned back on and unable to drive it safely. Got to Tires Plus (closest open facility) CVT belt deteriorated in transmission. Notorious issue for the 2017 HR-V. Towed to O'Malley Honda in Wausau, WI, for 2nd opinion. Concurred with transmisdion replacement needed due to deteriorating CVT belt. Would like financial assistance to repair vehicle.”

“There was a light on the vehicle with the sensor P2337 & parking brake sensor and I took the vehicle to a garage who evaluated the car, cleared the light. They stated if the light came back on to return to the dealer. While I was driving the car, the lights returned when the car suddenly lost acceleration while driving the day after the licensed mechanic had evaluated it and stated it was fine. How we read this (methodology)

How to read this: raw complaint totals are not a clean reliability score — a model year with more cars sold, or simply more years on the road, accumulates more complaints regardless of how good it is. So this page leans on two signals that are not distorted by sales volume: the share of complaints falling on each vehicle system (the breakdown above) and NHTSA's own crash / fire / injury / death flags. When we compare model years of the same model, we normalise by years on the road (complaints ÷ vehicle age) rather than comparing raw totals. Age-normalised, the 2017 Honda HR-V draws about 12.0 complaints per year on the road, ranking 7 of 9 among the Honda HR-V model years we have ingested (1 = most complaints per year on road).
