“My 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe equipped with a 6L80 transmission began experiencing transmission-related drivability issues at approximately 130,000 miles. The vehicle jerked on takeoff, had delayed/slow shifting, produced a whining noise, and later had intermittent shuddering/surging while driving. During service, metallic debris/shavings were found in the transmission fluid. The transmission ultimately required replacement at my expense. I am aware of GM Technical Service Bulletin 20-NA-142, “Shudder/Surging While Driving,” which includes 2015–2022 Chevrolet Tahoe models equipped with MYC/MYD tran…”

We almost got hit several times trying to get it to the side of the road for safety. I had to pay almost $1800 to get it towed home (we were in Peoria about 150 miles from home to see his doctor). This deterioration occurred without any external damage, collision repair, or environmental abuse. The vehicle has 76,000 miles and has been regularly washed and maintained throughout ownership. “I have a 2017 Chevy Tahoe Z71, and the paint on the hood , now moving to the top of the Tahoe is showing visible defects. The hood paint started to look cloudy. Even after buffing and polishing it would not improve. Talk to a professional detailer who stated that the problem was with the clear coat. The cost to repair and repaint the vehicle would be way more than an average citizen can afford; especially this day in time. People have mentioned it may require sanding the exterior down to bare metal, which would affect the car’s resale value etc ..After doing some research , I do see this is…”

NHTSA complaint #11729832, 2026

“I had no issues that would hint there was an issue with my power steering. I stopped at a drive thru, and when leaving and crossing 4 lanes to get into a lane, my power steering went out in the middle, driving less than 20 mph. I am very lucky that no cars were coming and I was able to pull into a parking lot that was across the street. My 3 kids were in the car when this occurred, and it seems this is a common occurance. This is a safety issue that needs addressed before someone gets killed.”
NHTSA complaint #11653847, 2025

How we read this (methodology)

How to read this: raw complaint totals are not a clean reliability score — a model year with more cars sold, or simply more years on the road, accumulates more complaints regardless of how good it is. So this page leans on two signals that are not distorted by sales volume: the share of complaints falling on each vehicle system (the breakdown above) and NHTSA's own crash / fire / injury / death flags. When we compare model years of the same model, we normalise by years on the road (complaints ÷ vehicle age) rather than comparing raw totals. Age-normalised, the 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe draws about 17.3 complaints per year on the road, ranking 9 of 15 among the Chevrolet Tahoe model years we have ingested (1 = most complaints per year on road).
