“The factory paint on my 2015 Toyota Highlander, Blizzard Pearl (Toyota code 070), is delaminating from the primer. The base coat lifts and peels in sheets, starting on the roof, fender, and pillars — the panels with the greatest UV exposure. There has been no collision, repaint, or chemical damage; this is spontaneous adhesion loss between the factory base coat and primer. First noticed 5/5/2026 at ~137,193 miles, it has spread across the roof and pillars, with the largest piece so far (~4"x2") flying off the vehicle. Delamination lines radiating under the paint indicate more will detach, and…”

“APRIL 24, 2015 [XXX] TO AN APPROPRIATE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION: IN NOVEMBER 2014, I PURCHASED A TOYOTA HIGHLANDER LIMITED MODEL ID# [XXX]:. DURING FREEZING WEATHER THIS WINTER I DISCOVERED A DANGEROUS DESIGN FAULT RELATING TO THE VEHICLE. THE DEFROSTER CLEARS THE WINDSHIELD BUT DOES NOTHING TO FREE THE WIPERS FROM ICE. THAT WAS THE CASE FOR ME DURING FOUR DAYS OF FREEZING WEATHER. THERE IS AN AU…”

“AT 2000 MILES WE NOTICED OUR WHEELS PITTING. WE THOUGHT THIS WAS UNUSUAL AS OUR WHEELS WERE PLASTIC COATED CALLED 'CROMETECH'. WE WERE AT THE DEALERS AND MENTIONED THAT OUR CAR HAD ONLY 2000 MILES AND SHOULDN'T BE HAVING THIS PROBLEM. OUR CAR NOW HAS 7070MILES YES SEVEN THOUSAND MILES AND THEY WON'T DO ANYTHING FOR US. MY WIFE AND I ARE IN OUR 80'S AND THEY ARE ARE TAKEING ADVANTAGE OF US BECAUSE WE'RE OLD. THEY WANT US TO PAY FOR NEW WHEELS $750.. EACH.”

How we read this (methodology)
How to read this: raw complaint totals are not a clean reliability score — a model year with more cars sold, or simply more years on the road, accumulates more complaints regardless of how good it is. So this page leans on two signals that are not distorted by sales volume: the share of complaints falling on each vehicle system (the breakdown above) and NHTSA's own crash / fire / injury / death flags. When we compare model years of the same model, we normalise by years on the road (complaints ÷ vehicle age) rather than comparing raw totals. Age-normalised, the 2015 Toyota Highlander draws about 15.8 complaints per year on the road, ranking 6 of 13 among the Toyota Highlander model years we have ingested (1 = most complaints per year on road).
Before you buy this Toyota Highlander
Don't buy on the strength of a problems page alone. Check the exact VIN of the car you're looking at. The open recalls are free, and the full $19 safety report pulls every complaint, safety rating and a downloadable PDF for that one vehicle.
