“Transmission pump failure on a recalled & replaced pump! Almost caused a wreck please place a new recall”
NHTSA complaint #11528707, 2023 · crash

“The vehicle experienced a sudden transmission/powertrain failure while driving. The transmission began slipping, with engine RPM increasing but the vehicle failing to accelerate normally. The vehicle would move very slowly or not move forward at all, creating a significant safety risk in traffic because the driver could not reliably accelerate, merge, or clear intersections. Prior to complete failure, symptoms included delayed engagement when shifting into drive, sluggish acceleration, and slipping under throttle. There were no clear warning lamps before the incident, or any warning indicator…”
NHTSA complaint #11744915, 2026

“Yesterday I left to run errands and noticed that my vehicle shifted fine into reverse, but did not want to go forward when put in gear. I thought maybe it was cold and let it warm up the more I drove the more sluggish it became going forward I came back home after driving about 4 miles when I pulled in the garage. I noticed there was transmission fluid on the floor. My grandson came and looked at it and added 2 quarts of fluid. I took it to my Dodge dealer this morning and they told me the fluid was so low that it burned up the pump and now I need to replace the transmission Itself. My drive y…”

“The contact owns a 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated that while his son was driving approximately 55 MPH, the front driver's side headrest deployed from the base and struck the contact's son. The failure occurred without being in an accident. There was no warning light illuminated, and the air bag did not deploy. The contact's son sustained severe pain in the neck. Medical attention was sought at an urgent care facility. The contact's son received two steroid shots due to the neck pain. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. “The front passenger headrest deployed for no reason. We had just parked the van and my 13 year old daughter was behind the passenger seat when the headrest deployed and something hit her in the face. We were in no accident nor rear-ended.”
NHTSA complaint #11560314, 2023 · 1 injury(ies)

“The active head restraint deployed on it's own. I was stopped at a light and the headrest slammed into the back of my head. I was alone in the vehicle, and nothing struck the seat or my vehicle. Upon inspection, the plastic clips that hold the metal bar in place have broken. It caused a headache and neck pain, as it jarred me unexpectedly. This affected my safety, and had I been moving at the time it could have caused an accident, putting others at risk as well. I called the dealer I purchased the vehicle from and was quoted over $600 for the part (replacement headrest) and labor, but have not…”

“I am a paraplegic. I drive an adapted van with hand controls that include a Sure-Grip A600 spinner knob. This is equipment purchased from and installed by my mobility vehicle dealer, and is intended to allow operating the steering wheel with one hand so that the other can operate the throttle and brake, as well as other controls. Today while driving and making a hard turn, the plastic knob pulled off the shaft of the mount, causing me to lose control of the van and have a serious accident. This appears to be a clear case of defective product design as the plastic knob was merely pressed o…”

How we read this (methodology)

How to read this: raw complaint totals are not a clean reliability score — a model year with more cars sold, or simply more years on the road, accumulates more complaints regardless of how good it is. So this page leans on two signals that are not distorted by sales volume: the share of complaints falling on each vehicle system (the breakdown above) and NHTSA's own crash / fire / injury / death flags. When we compare model years of the same model, we normalise by years on the road (complaints ÷ vehicle age) rather than comparing raw totals. Age-normalised, the 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan draws about 23.2 complaints per year on the road, ranking 7 of 9 among the Dodge Grand Caravan model years we have ingested (1 = most complaints per year on road).

Before you buy this Dodge Grand Caravan

Don't buy on the strength of a problems page alone. Check the exact VIN of the car you're looking at. The open recalls are free, and the full $19 safety report pulls every complaint, safety rating and a downloadable PDF for that one vehicle.
