“THE ENGINE BELT IDLER PULLEY BOLT BROKE CAUSING A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING WHEN THE SERPENTINE BELT CAME OFF THE ALTERNATOR AND POWER STEERING PUMP. THIS IS THE SAME PROBLEM ASSOCIATED WITH RECALL 12V550000 A FEW YEARS AGO. THE DEALER SAID THE VEHICLE WAS FIXED UNDER THE RECALL BUT IT WAS BEFORE I OWNED IT SO I DON'T KNOW FOR SURE. I BELIEVE THE RECALL SHOULD BE REINSTATED. THE VEHICLE WAS MOVING ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET AT LESS THAN 25 MPH AND MY MOM WAS DRIVING. IF SHE HAD BEEN GOING ANY FASTER SHE WOULD HAVE CRASHED.”

I AM AWARE THAT THERE HAS BEEN AN INVESTIGATION THAT HAS BEEN OPENED IN ABOUT APRIL OF 2018 AND WE WANT OUR CIRCUMSTANCES TO BE INCLUDED IN THIS INVESTIGATION. BMW IS CURRENTLY REFUSING TO COVER THE REPAIRS.”

How we read this (methodology)

How to read this: raw complaint totals are not a clean reliability score — a model year with more cars sold, or simply more years on the road, accumulates more complaints regardless of how good it is. So this page leans on two signals that are not distorted by sales volume: the share of complaints falling on each vehicle system (the breakdown above) and NHTSA's own crash / fire / injury / death flags. When we compare model years of the same model, we normalise by years on the road (complaints ÷ vehicle age) rather than comparing raw totals. Age-normalised, the 2010 BMW X5 draws about 8.7 complaints per year on the road, ranking 7 of 11 among the BMW X5 model years we have ingested (1 = most complaints per year on road).

Before you buy this BMW X5

Don't buy on the strength of a problems page alone. Check the exact VIN of the car you're looking at. The open recalls are free, and the full $19 safety report pulls every complaint, safety rating and a downloadable PDF for that one vehicle.
